You can start by choosing what type of hinge you want to install. At TKDC, we exclusively use European or concealed soft-close hinges from Blum, ensuring top-notch quality and a smooth, quiet mechanism that extends the life of your cabinetry. In this guide, we’ll walk you through each step to successfully install cabinet door hinges like a pro.

Tools and Materials You Will Need

Step 1: Measure and mark where you’ll drill a hinge hole (skip if you bought doors from TKDC)

Using your measuring tape and pencil, measure and mark 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) from the top and bottom edges of the cabinet door. Ensure both markings align perfectly to keep the door opening and closing smoothly.

Note: this measurement is only for normal kitchen cabinet doors that have 2 hinges, and if you bought doors from us, you don’t need to do this because our doors come with pre-drilled hinge holes.

Step 2: Drill your hinge holes (skip if you bought doors from TKDC)

Use your drill and 35 mm Forstner (or if you have a machine), to drill a hinge hole do your door. The hole should be on the centre of your marking. Start the drill slowly to avoid damaging the door. Once you’ve reached the right depth of 1.3 cm, remove the drill and the excess wood particles.

Step 3: Attach your hinge cup

Position the hinge cup into the drilled hole, making sure the screw holes are flush with the cabinet door surface. Using a power drill, fasten the wood screws into place, ensuring the hinge is securely attached. Use the screws provided in the package.

Step 4: Measure and mark where you’ll install your hinge mounting plate (skip if you bought doors from TKDC)

Position the door to your cabinet and create a small, even gap (usually around 1/16 inch or 0.16 cm) between the door and cabinet. Mark 2.25 inches (5.7 cm) from the outer edge of the cabinet wall, then add the gap measurement to 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) for both the top and bottom hinge locations. Use a pencil to draw intersecting lines on the cabinet wall for precise hinge placement.

Step 5: Install your hinge mounting plate

Position the mounting plate at the point where the lines intersect, aligning it so the screw holes are level. Using a power drill, drive screws into the holes to secure the plate. Repeat the process to attach the second mounting plate to the cabinet in the same way.

Step 6: Attach the door to your cabinet

With the door open, slide the hinges into the mounting plates. Firmly press on the hinge arms to snap them into place. Open and close the door to ensure the hinges function properly and that the door is aligned. You should hear a clicking or snapping sound when the hinges secure correctly.
